Academic Calendar Sees a Number of Changes

By Treva Dayton, Academic Director | Friday, August 26, 2011 12:24 PM

Another school year has started, but unfortunately the heat and drought are still with us. So in addition to the usual challenges you face with any new academic year, you’ll have to deal with soaring temperatures and a scorched earth for some time to come.  According to weather forecasts, maybe for a very long time to come.

I encourage you to take a few minutes, hopefully in the air-conditioned comfort of your classroom or home, to review the UIL academic website for important information concerning the coming year and some useful new items for coaches and academic contestants.

It’s the time of year to start making arrangements to attend the Student Activities Conferences (SAC) around the state. Each fall, the UIL hosts four conferences on different college campuses across Texas. SACs are designed to help high school students and sponsors begin to prepare for UIL academic events.

Registration is free for the conferences that last from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Instructional sessions are designed for beginning and advanced students, as well as academic coordinators and coaches. Another summer has come and gone. I hope all of you had a good rest and are ready to tackle the new year. The summer months have been a busy time at the UIL office. There have been many meetings, conversations and deadlines to meet. We are well aware of the Mayan prediction of a 2012 apocalypse. In some ways, 2012 will bring on changes that will end the One–Act Play Contest as we know it. It is extremely important that you be prepared to follow all the new rules.

You will need to order a copy of the Handbook for One-Act Play 19th edition. Make sure you review it carefully as the changes are significant. I want to thank the students from Barbara Jordan High School in Houston for providing the cover art.

Rules Compliance Program

By Stephanie Ramirez, Communications Officer | Friday, August 19, 2011 11:13 AM

The UIL Rules Compliance Program (RCP) is the new education course for coaches grades 7-12 and athletic trainers. All coaches must complete the course before the first day of practice for their first sport season. The course is optional for athletic trainers. The RCP must be completed to stay in compliance with not only UIL rules, but also state law.

While each coach needs to complete the course only once, regardless of how many sports he or she coaches, there is a new sport-specific section this year that must be completed for each sport coached.

Once completed, coaches must file the the completion certificate with their school. To access the RCP on the UIL website, please go to http://www.uiltexas.org/athletics/rules-compliance-program.

At the request of member schools, the UIL reviewed the relay takeoff protocol for Swimming and Diving this summer. For the past few years, the relay takeoff protocol has been a controversial topic for the coaches because the UT Swim Center, the host of the State Meet, uses the electronic timing system and touch pad equipment.

After careful consideration by the UIL staff and Swimming and Diving Sports Officials, the protocol for the utilization of relay exchange electronic equipment has been revised for the 2011-12 season.

As volleyball season approaches, coaches and players should be aware of a new rule change. Last year, Rule 3-2-1 of National Federation of High School rules for volleyball allowed state associations to choose the color of the competition ball. This new rule to allow colored-panel volleyballs takes affect at the beginning of 2011 season for Texas schools.

The ball cannot have more than three colors, and one-third of the ball must be white. Each panel must be a solid color. School districts will be allowed to choose the color for the panels. By rule the home team shall provide the game balls for competitions. The UIL regional and state tournament competitions will utilize the red, white and blue colored-panel ball.
