The New 6A Conference and Music

By Dr. Brad Kent, Director of Music | Tuesday, December 03, 2013 2:14 PM

How will the new 6A conference alignment impact music?  I thought it might be helpful to issue some basic information to address questions that may arise relating to this change. First of all, let’s look at the current enrollment numbers by conference and compare them to the enrollment numbers by conference that will be used beginning in the fall of 2014.

Current New
5A 2090 and up 6A 2100 and up
4A 1005 to 2089 5A 1060 to 2099
3A 450 to 1004 4A 465 to 1059
2A 200 to 449 3A 220 to 464
1A 199 and below 2A 105 to 219
  1A 104.9 and below

As you can see, the new 6A alignment is basically dividing what is now 1A into two different conferences.  What does this mean for music?  Music will have five conferences: 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, and 2A/1A (combined).

Concert and Sight-Reading Contest

Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year 6A music organizations will have what are the current 5A requirements, 5A music organizations will have what are the current 4A requirements, and the same pattern remains true all the way down.  2A and 1A organizations will have what are now the 1A requirements.  The PML grading system will remain the same.  To see how this might impact your program, go to http://www.uiltexas.org/music/concert-sight-reading and click the links on the right side of the page.

Marching Band Contest

Even Years – 4A and 6A advance to Area and State
Odd Years – 1A/2A (combined), 3A, and 5A advance to Area and State

Our website will be updated at the end of the 2013-2014 school year to reflect all of these related changes.  The 2014-2015 C&CR will also reflect similar adjustments in language.  In short, very little, if anything is changing.  I hope this helps to answer any questions that you may have.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can further assist you.
