UIL Sponsor Excellence Award Nomination Forms Sent Out

Superintendents across the state have been sent electronic nomination forms for the UIL Sponsor Excellence Award presented by Balfour. The UIL distributed these forms via email this week.
Now in its 20th year, this prestigious award goes to outstanding sponsors and coaches from all UIL disciplines that help student-participants take their skills to the next level.
Winners are selected by a panel of judges in the areas of music, athletics and academics from nominations submitted by principals and superintendents. Each winner receives $1,000 and a memento from the UIL recognizing their outstanding achievements.
The deadline to submit nominations is Nov. 1. Best of luck and congratulations to all our nominees!
Only Minor Rule Changes for Music in 2012

The UIL Music Programs continue to operate in a stable climate with minimal changes from year to year. Virtually all UIL music rules remain unchanged with the exception of some minor procedural issues pertaining to Sight-reading Contest. The following rule changes will be in effect for the 2012 Sight-reading Contests in band, choir and orchestra.
Section 1111(a)(7) - RECORDING DEVICES IN THE SIGHT-READING ROOM. With the advent of smart phones and other portable recording devices it has become more prevalent for individuals to record the sight-reading music during the competition for later review. This practice is inconsistent with the expectations for the sight-reading contest. Consequently the UIL Legislative Council has adopted a regulation that prohibits the use of recording devices in the sight-reading room.
First Student Activities Conference This Weekend

Sept. 17 is the first Student Activities Conference for the 2011-12 school year. Each year, conferences are held around the state to provide a crash course on all things academic related. The conferences are designed to help high school students and sponsors begin to prepare for spring contests. This week the conference will be held in Lubbock on the campus of Texas Tech University.
All Student Activities Conferences are free and there’s no pre-registration necessary. All conferences will begin at 9 a.m. and will end by 1:30 p.m. Students may choose from novice and advanced sessions in some academic areas, as well as small-group sessions in specific UIL activities. UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee for Music to Meet in Austin

The UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee for Music will meet Sept. 14 in Austin. This is an opportunity for the committee to discuss possible changes to music rules for next school year.
The proposals that will be discussed include a new option for scheduling area marching band contests; scheduling multiple sites for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest in the hopes of reducing travel and creating more specific guidelines for summer marching band practice during August.
UIL Football State Championship Tickets on Sale Now

Tickets for the 2011 Conference 1A-5A UIL Football State Championships which will be held at Cowboys Stadium in December are now available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased online through www.ticketmaster.com
Tickets allow access to all games being played on the same day. Tickets are $12 for Friday, Dec. 9 and $15 for the games being played Dec. 15-17. Information about the 2011 UIL Football State Championships and how to purchase tickets can be found online on the UIL website at http://www.uiltexas.org/football/state.
Tickets for the 1A-Six Man Div. I and II games which will be held at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene will be available for purchase at the stadium the day of the games on Dec. 10.
UIL Contributes Artifacts to New Exhibit on Texas High School Football

Texas high school football history would be incomplete without acknowledging the role the University Interscholastic League played in its growth. A new exhibit at The Bob Bullock State History Museum chronicles the history of the sport and includes contributions made by the League.
Texas High School Football: More Than The Game, a special exhibition open through January 22, recounts stories of past gridiron glories and all the pageantry that surrounds the game. As the governing body of Texas high school extracurricular contests since 1910, the UIL has played a major role in shaping the sport into what it is today.

When former Texas speech, debate and theater teacher Abby Rike shares her story about joining the cast of the Biggest Loser in 2009, she draws more than a few laughs.
“As ya’ll can tell by my accent, I am a nice Southern girl,” she said. “Southern girls don’t stand in their nekkid clothes and tell people their weight.”
For seven weeks, clad in only a sports bra and spandex, Abby swallowed that Southern pride and stood on a huge scale with a five-foot display screen in front of America.
She knew she didn’t have a choice. She desperately wanted her life back.
“I thought if I could get healthy, I could start living again,” she said.
‘Best in Class’ Magazine Highlights Impact of UIL

When Texas School Business Magazine decided to publish a special summer issue, Editor-in-Chief Jim Walsh knew the issue needed to emphasize the importance of extracurricular activities in students’ lives.
“We wanted to illustrate how artistic expression and athletic achievement often bring out the very best in students — and educators,” editor Katie Ford said.
And the editors knew who to tap to write the articles — Bobby Hawthorne, freelance writer and former UIL academic director.
Rules Compliance Program (RCP) Replaced COPE

RCP is COPE. Last school year, UIL launched the first version of RCP (Rules Compliance Program). It replaced COPE (Coaches and Officials Positive Expectations), a mandatory sportsmanship program for coaches. COPE no longer exists.
Junior high and high school coaches must complete the RCP each year before they have contact with their athletes.
The RCP was designed to provide coaches a simple, efficient method of meeting state law requirements for mandated safety training and steroid education. It also connects coaches with updated information that impacts their daily duties.
Prescribed Music List Update

The UIL Music Department is currently in the process of updating the Prescribed Music List. The library contains more than 18,000 titles in its repertoire, and a vast number of the titles do not have the score attached with it.
The music department hopes to have the physical library of the Prescribed Music List updated in the next six months. Once the Prescribed Music List is up to date, the music department will switch from the current filing system to the Wenger Music Storage System.
