Opportunities, Deadlines and Changes in OAP

The script and set addition deadline is rapidly approaching. Daily submissions are now arriving with many scripts for evaluation. Please make sure that you follow the procedures in the 19th edition of the Handbook for One-Act Play.
Failure to do so may result in a procedural disapproval and, if close to the deadline, inability to resubmit. Please make sure that your check accompanies your package. That can create incredible delays. It’s best to use the post office box address found on every other page of your handbook.
Samuel French, Inc. Announces New eBook Program

Samuel French, Inc., the world’s oldest and largest publisher of plays and musicals, announced this week that they will expand their offerings to include eBooks. Titles from playwrights such as Dale Wasserman, Charles Busch, Israel Horovitz, Ray Cooney and Marsha Norman will be available for download beginning in November, along with other Samuel French plays and musicals.
This is a significant development for the theatre industry, which has only a few small entries into the eBook market from other theatrical publishing companies. ILPC Spring Convention Moves to Late April

Due to statewide testing dates, UIL regional competitions and conflicts with the national journalism conference, the ILPC Spring Convention will be held April 28-29 this year at the University of Texas at Austin.
We surveyed members last year to see if an early date or late date in April would work best, and an overwhelming majority selected the later date.
The later date offers a few benefits for schools and ILPC. For example, we moved the newspaper and broadcast deadlines from Feb. 1 to Feb. 15, and with more time, we are hoping to add a competition component to the convention.
Richards Joins Academic Department

Trudy Richards is the new administrative associate for the speech department.

Trudy Richards may be a new addition to the UIL Speech & Debate department, but she already has significant experience with the League.
She competed in a variety of academic events as a student and then coached journalism while teaching at Manor High School. Richards also worked as an intern in the mailroom at UIL during her undergraduate career.
Richards, an alumna of the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, joined the UIL staff as the administrative associate on Sept. 1.

UIL Adds Essay Competition to Activities

The University Interscholastic League now sponsors the Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition. Established in 1996, the competition was most recently administered by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) of The University of Texas at Austin. The UIL is also a unit of DDCE, so that affiliation will continue.
“This is an exciting opportunity for UIL,” competition administrator David Trussell said. “It’s a new type of activity for our academic program, and it can provide an avenue for students who have not previously participated in UIL competitions.”

Alan Cohen, author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul,” wrote, "It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power."
Nowhere is this truer than in the educational community, where we are often guilty of doing something just because that's the way it has always been done. However, the University Interscholastic League community has never hesitated to embrace change when it is in the best interests of our students. The time has now come to make a change in extemporaneous speaking that will certainly benefit students.
SAC Adviser’s Meeting Comes to the Leaguer

The fall rush has begun.
No, I didn’t join a sorority (don’t think they would really take a 40-something mother of two), but I have begun the fall frenzy of travelling across the state presenting at Student Activity Conferences (SAC).
During each SAC, I end the conference with an adviser’s meeting where I highlight some of the upcoming changes, issues and events.
Since many journalism teachers are unable to attend the SACs, I thought I would review what I say in those adviser’s meetings for everyone.
Academic Calendar Sees a Number of Changes

Another school year has started, but unfortunately the heat and drought are still with us. So in addition to the usual challenges you face with any new academic year, you’ll have to deal with soaring temperatures and a scorched earth for some time to come. According to weather forecasts, maybe for a very long time to come.
I encourage you to take a few minutes, hopefully in the air-conditioned comfort of your classroom or home, to review the UIL academic website for important information concerning the coming year and some useful new items for coaches and academic contestants.
New Year Brings New Rules for OAP

Another summer has come and gone. I hope all of you had a good rest and are ready to tackle the new year. The summer months have been a busy time at the UIL office. There have been many meetings, conversations and deadlines to meet. We are well aware of the Mayan prediction of a 2012 apocalypse. In some ways, 2012 will bring on changes that will end the One–Act Play Contest as we know it. It is extremely important that you be prepared to follow all the new rules.
You will need to order a copy of the Handbook for One-Act Play 19th edition. Make sure you review it carefully as the changes are significant. I want to thank the students from Barbara Jordan High School in Houston for providing the cover art.
