Reclassification and Realignment Released Feb. 1

The 2010 Reclassification and Realignment for football and basketball was released at 9 a.m. (CST) Feb. 1 on the UIL website and through regional education service centers.
Euless Trinity Wins 5A Division I Title

As most of you probably know by now the University Interscholastic League is celebrating its 100th Anniversary during the 2009-2010 school year. Music has been a member of the UIL family for better than 60 of those years. As I have looked back at our history it has been interesting to see how some things have changed dramatically while others have remained static for decades.

Two Recent Issues Need Clarification in Sight Reading Contests

Yep. Texas is a big state. Let’s face it. According to Mapquest, it is 820 miles from Texarkana to El Paso and an equally impressive 930 miles from Texline in the Panhandle to Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley. That’s a lot of wide-open spaces, and at countless locations in this vastness, there will be UIL Concert and Sight-reading Music Contests this spring. And, it will be the hope that most, if not all, will be run consistently and with little confusion or misunderstanding. Of course, this is always the goal but perhaps not always the reality.
Summer Conditioning Program to Include 7th and 8th Grade Students in 2010

School administrators, coaches and UIL staff all agree that the summer strength and conditioning program has been very successful. Since 2003 school coaches have been able to instruct student-athletics during the summer in strength and conditioning drills. This additional summer instructional time has helped prepare students for the physical demands of participating in all athletic programs.
New Golf Rule Stirs Up Few Questions

UIL Honors Its Veterans

On the 11th day of the 11th month, just 45 minutes before the 11th hour, the UIL staff gathered to commemorate Veteran’s Day. Compliance officer Ed Stidham came in formal military dress. Lt. Col. Stidham served 25 years in the Army Reserve. His duties took him to nine different countries and about 30 different states. He retired April 15, 1995.
League Unveils Historical Marker

In connection with the Centennial Celebrations, the UIL unveiled a historical marker on Oct. 26 that details UIL’s history and values. The unveiling followed the annual Legislative Council meeting.
Music Director Honors Former Band Director at State Meet

At the Conference AA 2009-2010 State Marching Band Contest, Music Director Richard Floyd had the unique opportunity to honor a former high school band director, Charles Enloe of Wichita Falls, whose students participated in the first UIL Marching Band Competition in 1947.
Student Activity Conferences and Centennial Celebrations Mark the Start of the Year

When I turned my desk calendar from October to November — and yes, despite my Blackberry’s electronic calendar I still rely on the old-fashioned one for notes, reminders, etc. — I had to pause and marvel at how quickly the first part of the school year had passed. But I realized that recent months hadn’t just flown by but had been packed with so many events and projects that the days just seemed to blur together.
Schools Continue to Support Sunday Rule

Throughout the years, speech coaches and debaters from a few of the larger conference programs in the state have argued that the Sunday Prohibition Rule (C&CR, Section 900, (b)) should be repealed or, at least, modified to allow students to be sponsored by their League member school to more tournaments that hold rounds on Sunday.
