Legislative Council to Vote on Student Congress in October

Last fall, Princeton High School hosted Congress competition for the first time at the State Capitol. The school will host another competition this year. Within an hour of opening online registration, more than half of the tournament slots were filled.

At its June meeting, the Academic Committee of the UIL Legislative Council gave an affirmative nod to Congress as a new pilot contest for the League. The full Council will give final review to the preliminary action in October.
Congress is a mock legislative assembly competition where students draft bills (proposed laws) and resolutions (position statements) that the assembly debates and votes upon to pass into law. It is an individual contest in a large group setting, modeling the legislative process of democracy, specifically the United States Congress.
One-Act Play Readies for a New Year with Facebook, Rule Changes, Proposals

Welcome back! The staff at UIL hope you had a wonderful summer break and are ready to get started on some new adventures.
As we approach the school year, it will be important that you prepare yourself with good information. One of the “GREAT!” things I discovered last March was the Facebook page “UIL One-Act Play Directors” created by Tisa Whitfill. Its membership has increased from 39 when I first saw it to 600 today.
The lively and useful exchanges about play titles, curriculum needs and general “swap-shopping” is wonderful to watch. Make a point of becoming a member.
A+ Gears Up for School Year

As you gear up for a successful academic year in 2012-2013, don’t forget to include A+ Academics on your back-to-school to-do list.
• Online registration is available on the UIL website (www.uiltexas.org/aplus). Each campus that participates in A+ Academics must register with the state office school year. The process takes only a couple of minutes, and when you register we’ll send you a packet of important information, including a complimentary copy of the 2012-2013 A+ Handbook.
Student Activity Conferences Set for September

The UIL will conduct three Student Activity Conferences this fall, featuring all the high school academic events at these sites.
September 15 — Tyler Junior College, Tyler
September 22 — Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi
September 29 — The University of Texas at Austin
Please note: West Texas A&M University, Canyon has been canceled.
2012 ILPC Convention Is Ready for You

Yesterday was a fantastic day.
I went to the 2012 ILPC Spring Convention.
I know what you are thinking. The convention was in April. It was. But I still went yesterday, and you can go tomorrow if you want.
During the convention this past spring, UIL’s awesome public affairs guy, Chris Schmidt, filmed five of the break-out sessions for us. Then over the summer, Chris edited the videos (like taking out Bobby Hawthorne’s profanity) for public consumption – starting with me.
2012 All-State Journalism Staff Named

Forty-eight students have been named to the 2011 All-State Journalism Staff. To qualify for the staff, students must have earned 50 points by participating and winning different journalism contests throughout the year. Students can earn points by participating in UIL invitational contests, UIL district, regional and state contests, as well as ILPC and similar type journalism contests.
Speech Transitions Computers into Prep Rooms

State Meet 2012 is now in the history books. For speech, it truly was historical as the final rounds of Cross-Examination Debate were held at the Texas State Capitol and computers were allowed in the Extemporaneous Speaking preparation room for the first time.
Speech teams embraced the new computer rule. The draw room statistics for the preliminary rounds were 31 computers in Informative and 29 in Persuasive, so 50 percent of state competitors moved to electronic files this season. Out of the 60 contestants advancing to finals in both speaking contests (6 per conference, 30 per contest), 41 opted for electronic files.
Barbara Jordan Essay Competition Winners Announced

In early May the 12 regional finalists of UIL’s newest contest, the Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition filled a banquet room at the AT&T Conference Center to receive their awards and hear excerpts from some of the winning papers.
David Trussell, the contest administrator, also announced the state winners at the dinner. Roger Cain from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy in Austin won first place and a $2,500 scholarship. Rachel Green from Pittsburg High School won second place and a $1,500 scholarship and Stephen Mangum from Lee High School in Midland won third place and a $1,000 scholarship.

UIL Lone Star Cup Race Reaches Halfway Point

The latest update to the UIL Lone Star Cup standings was posted on March 16 and at the midway point in the season only a few points separate the leaders in each conference. The current standings include State and Area Marching Band, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling and Basketball.
The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to five high schools, one in each of the five UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A), based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL.
