The first day of the 2011 Girls’ State Basketball tournament was a special day for the UIL staff and for myself. On that day, we had the privilege to honor basketball legend and the Granbury High School head girls’ basketball coach, Leta Andrews.

Andrews is the all-time winningest high school basketball coach with a record 1,346 wins.

Andrew’s broke the record on Dec. 7, 2010 with her 1,334th win when her Lady Pirates defeated visiting Midlothian Lady Panthers 64-45. That win allowed Coach Andrews to surpass the former record holder and retired legendary Forth Worth Dunbar boys’ basketball coach, Robert Hughes.

FAQ for upcoming track and field season

By Sheila Henderson and Traci Neely, Assistant Athletic Directors | Friday, March 18, 2011 9:22 AM

March marks the beginning of yet another track and field season for our Texas coaches and athletes.  To prepare for the upcoming track season, we thought would answer some of our most frequently asked questions.

How many track meets can an individual or school participate in each season?
A student representing a participant school shall enter a maximum of eight (8) school meets prior to the district meet. Additionally, if a school chooses to participate in a regional qualifiers meet, it does not count toward one of the allowable eight for the season.

Busy Time of Year at the UIL

By Stephanie Ramirez, Communications Officer | Monday, March 14, 2011 3:38 PM

From state championship events, to meetings, to keeping up with business as usual, it has been a busy time of year around the UIL office. Since the weekend of the Swimming & Diving State Meet on March 18 and 19, there has been a UIL State event every weekend.

Swimming & Diving was followed up by the Wrestling State Tournament, the Girls' Basketball State Tournament, the Boys' Basketball State Tournament, and this week was kicked off with the CX Debate State Tournament. These state events are part of what the UIL is all about. These experiences help mold student participants into the leaders and citizens they will become. Congratulations to all UIL State Championship participants and champions! To see a full list of state championship results, please visit the UIL website at www.uiltexas.org.

In other news, the UIL Finance Committee, a standing committee of the UIL Legislative Council, met on March 9 in Austin to discuss the UIL budget. As a result of that meeting, UIL membership fees and ticket prices for 2011-12 will not increase, based on the recommendation of UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt.

Every year, more than 150,000 spectators travel to Austin to watch history in the making as the best of the best student-athletes in the state of Texas compete in the UIL Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball State Tournaments. Each visit is a new experience as the sport and the tournament have evolved since becoming a UIL athletic event.

The first UIL Boys’ Basketball State Tournament was held in 1921 at Gregory Gym on The University of Texas at Austin campus. That year, El Paso High School defeated San Antonio High School for the first UIL basketball state championship, 25-11. Even though that score resembles a single quarter of scoring for today’s teams, there have only been a few significant changes in the 90-year history of UIL boys’ basketball.

Chad Flisowski
Chad Flisowski

As a child, Calhoun High School debate coach Chad Flisowski was intrigued by space. He was inspired by Star Trek, shuttle launches and the return of Halley’s Comet. He dreamt of sailing through space.

“I never lost that enthusiasm for space travel or space science as I grew older,” Flisowski said. “I read books on the subject, watched documentaries on the Discovery and History channels and even took astronomy in college. And I never gaze up at the night sky without a sense of wonder."
