FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2010 UIL Academic State Meet

May 6-8, 2010
Austin, TX

For its centennial year, the 2010 University Interscholastic League State Academic Meet will welcome more than 2,500 participants from across Texas to the University of Texas at Austin campus May 6-8.

State Champions will be named in each conference 1A through 5A, in 22 academic contests as well as the One-Act Play. For the Centennial Meet, students who place in the top six will receive a special commemorative medal.

“The entire UIL staff has been involved with various centennial events throughout the year, and the academic department is especially looking forward to sharing UIL memories during the upcoming State Meet,” Academic Director Treva Dayton said. “The energy and enthusiasm of thousands of Texas’ best and brightest students competing for state championships in academic and fine arts events always make the State Meet an exciting weekend.”

To commemorate the anniversary, the UIL Academic State Meet will feature a Centennial Anniversary display, a moveable wall depicting the highlights of academic UIL competition over the past century. The display, designed by UIL Theatre Director Luis Muñoz, will be open in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the university campus during the three-day meet. Hours for the display are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Students will have the opportunity to take their pictures with an additional panel display of former UIL competitors who have gone on to make a name for themselves in a wide range of endeavors.

Through participation at the UIL Academic State Meet, students qualify for the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships.  Since its inception in 1954, the TILF has awarded more than $23 million to more than 16,000 Texas high school students.  Grants and donations from foundations and individuals fund these academic scholarships, and each dollar donated to the TILF goes directly to Texas high school student scholarships.

Academic State Contests include one-act play, journalism, speech and debate, math and science, language arts, business education, computer science and social studies.

State Meet Participants, Schedules, and Results:
