FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, Texas-- The University Interscholastic League has entered into a one-year agreement to hold the 2011 UIL Team Tennis State Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, the UIL announced Thursday.

The World of Tennis at Lakeway has hosted the UIL Team Tennis State Championships since 1998 when it was moved from the Intramural Tennis Center and Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

“We are thrilled to bring the UIL Team Tennis State Championships to a community and facility that have been great supporters of tennis in the state of Texas,” said UIL Director of Athletics Dr. Mark Cousins. “We will work closely with the Texas A&M University athletic staff in providing a first-class state championship experience for our student participants and fans.”

“We are very excited to serve as the 2011 host for the UIL Team Tennis State Championships,” Texas A&M Director of Tennis Operations Kevin O’Shea said. “The Mitchell Tennis Center has served as the host site for the NCAA National Championships, the USTA Texas Summer Grand Slam, as well as International Tennis Federation Events, so we are elated to have the UIL Championships come to College Station. We know the fans, teams and coaches will enjoy our great setup and facilities.”

Team Tennis has been a UIL-sanctioned sport since 1983 with state champions crowned annually in Conferences 4A and 5A. The 2011 UIL Team Tennis State Championships will be held Nov. 4 and 5. This move will not affect the UIL Tennis State Tournament, held annually in the spring, as the World of Tennis at Lakeway and Penick-Allison Tennis Center will again host the championship event.
