FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The Seguin (Texas) High School Marching Band has been selected as the 2018 Section 6 recipient of the “National High School Heart of the Arts Award” by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

The National High School Heart of the Arts Award was created by the NFHS to recognize those individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive heart of the arts that represent the core mission of education-based activities. This is the fifth year that the National High School Heart of the Arts Award has been offered. Seguin High School was nominated for the award as the Texas nominee by the University Interscholastic League (UIL).

In late August 2017, Hurricane Harvey wreaked severe damage to much of the state of Texas. It did particular damage to Fulton High School, in which one wall of the gymnasium was left half-gone, debris littered the football field, and the entrances to the school were almost unrecognizable. Without a playable field, Rockport-Fulton’s first home football game with Leander Glenn High School was moved to a neutral site located 150 miles north of there – Seguin High School.

Unfortunately, the Rockport-Fulton marching band was unable to make the trip, as it too felt the effects of the storm - losing all of its instruments, stands, music library, equipment and uniforms.

In stepped the Seguin High School Marching Band, and the Mighty Matadors were there to substitute in their place. More than 150 SHS band members volunteered their time to play for Rockport-Fulton. The band even donated musical instruments to replace those lost in the hurricane.

The support didn’t stop there, as the band’s booster club helped raise $5,000 in donations to help Rockport-Fulton with the loss of sheet music, uniforms and instruments. In addition, the Seguin band donated musical instruments to replace those lost in the hurricane.

That generosity also inspired others in the Seguin community to pitch in, as the Seguin High School Sports Booster Club collected donations and had a postgame meal for the Rockport-Fulton team.

About the Award

The NFHS divides the nation into eight geographical sections. The states in Section 6 are Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Colorado.

Nominations for this award were generated through NFHS member state associations and reviewed by the NFHS Heart of the Arts Award Selection Committee composed of state association staff members.

This is the third-straight year a nominee from Texas has received the section award after being nominated by UIL. Premont High School won the award in 2017 and Van High School captured the honor in 2016.

While the national winner will be recognized June 29 at the NFHS Summer Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, the section winners will be recognized within their respective states and will receive awards before the end of the current school year.
