FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL Director of Policy since February 2009, has been named Director of Athletics for the University Interscholastic League, it was announced today.

Cousins, who has served as interim Director of Athletics since January 2011, will oversee and coordinate UIL athletic activities and reclassification and realignment.

“I am excited to continue in the role of Director of Athletics and carry on serving the students of Texas in this capacity,” said Cousins. “I am honored to take on this opportunity, and look forward to the new challenges that lie ahead.”

Cousins began his career at the UIL in 1994 while completing his master’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin.  He also completed his doctorate degree while working at the UIL, and has gained a unique perspective working in the athletic department over the years. He served as director of several sports prior to his appointment as UIL Director of Policy. He has served on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee, Soccer Rules Committee and Baseball Rules Committee. He is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Cousins is a graduate of Buna High School, where he participated in several UIL events. While attending The University of Texas at Austin, he served as a student assistant with the football program and worked in the Texas Legislature as a messenger for the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms.

“Dr. Mark Cousins has an extensive knowledge of the UIL Constitution & Contest Rules and a great understanding of UIL athletic programs,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt.  “I have complete faith in Dr. Cousins in this new role, and I know that his leadership will help UIL athletics continue to succeed in the coming years.”
