FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cliff Odenwald, UIL Associate Athletic Director since June 2007, has been named director of athletics for the University Interscholastic League, it was announced Monday.

Odenwald will fill the position recently vacated by UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt to oversee statewide steroid testing and coordinate UIL athletic activities.

“I am honored to take on this new role to serve the students of Texas in this capacity with the University Interscholastic League,” said Odenwald. “I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for athletics in the state of Texas.”

During his time at the UIL, Odenwald has implemented the statewide steroid testing program and administered the sport of football.  Throughout his career in Texas athletics, he served as an athletic director for two school districts over 14 years and coached football for 16 years. Odenwald previously served as director of athletics for Plano ISD, assistant athletic director at Garland ISD and was head football coach at Garland Naaman Forest High School and McMurry University.  He is a member of the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, where he served as president for two years and has represented the THSADA as a member of the Texas Coalition for Extracurricular Activities.

Odenwald received a bachelor’s degree from McMurry University and his Masters degree from Abilene Christian University. While attending McMurry University, he was a three-year letterman in football and was elected team captain and named all conference defensive lineman.  He is a graduate of Reicher Catholic High School, where he lettered in football and track.

“Through his guidance and commitment to our schools, Cliff Odenwald has proven himself to be the best person to lead the UIL athletic department,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt.  “His integrity and dedication to athletics are evident, and we are excited to have him serve in this new capacity.”
