FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX— Treva Dayton, assistant academic director of the University Interscholastic League for over nine years, has been named academic director of the organization, it was announced Wednesday.

Dayton will replace Bobby Hawthorne, who is retiring August 31, 2005.

“It is an honor to be selected as the academic director of the University Interscholastic League,” said Dayton. “I pledge my energy and best professional attention to the Texas public school teachers and administrators, and to the students of this state. Working with a talented staff we will seek public input and support to continue serving the creative and competitive activities of our schools.”

During her tenure at the UIL, Dayton has helped develop the elementary and junior high academic programs, and worked to increase urban area academic participation through a federal grant issued by the Texas Education Agency. Dayton originally joined the UIL staff in 1990 as an assistant academic director in charge of speech and debate and elementary and junior high academics. She resigned in 1997 to serve as assistant director for the National Federation of State High School Associations. Dayton re-joined the UIL staff in August of 2003 in her current capacity as assistant academic director in charge of elementary and junior high academics. Previously, Dayton taught speech and debate, theater and language arts, served as UIL coordinator and coached forensics at Pflugerville and Georgetown High Schools for nine years. Additionally, she has served as chair of the National Communication Association elementary and secondary division and has received the Outstanding Service Award and the Citation Award for Speech, Debate and Theater from the NFHS.

Dayton received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where she played basketball and received one of the first women’s basketball scholarships awarded in the program. She is a graduate of Waco Robinson High School, where she lettered in track, volleyball, and tennis, and was a state champion in basketball and informative speaking.

“Treva Dayton brings to the League a commitment of excellence to continue the work of those who came before her,” said UIL Director Dr. Bill Farney. “Eager to evaluate the entire contest offerings, she is privileged to work with a superlative staff as we approach the 100th anniversary of the University Interscholastic League, and the League is privileged to have her.”

In being named UIL academic director, Dayton becomes only the fourth person in the League’s 95-year history to head the academic department of the organization.
