Tips to Help Academic Meets Run Smoothly

By Treva Dayton | Wednesday, February 10, 2010 11:46 AM

February is flying by, and we’ve already passed the deadline for setting up academic and One-Act Play district meets. Although we are still dealing with a few instances of incorrect information, meets are now posted on the UIL Web site. Contact information for regional hosts is also available online, and we will post links to the regional handbooks in the near future. Regional academic meets are April 22-24, with almost all academic events except OAP being held on April 24 and/or 25.

Looking Forward… in the Computer Applications Contest

By | Wednesday, February 10, 2010 10:44 AM

Being directly linked to Microsoft Office, the Computer Applications Contest must change as this application package changes. As students graduate into the workplace or into college, they are better prepared to succeed with the current skills of Office 2007, which has already been in the marketplace for more than three years, rather than tethered to Office 2003, which is seven years old. Seven years is a long time in an environment based on technology.

Looking for new ideas for the next 100 years

By Jeanne Acton | Tuesday, January 12, 2010 11:43 AM

As you might have noticed, UIL is observing its 100th anniversary this year, which reminds me: if you haven’t purchased a copy of Bobby Hawthorne’s history of the League, you absolutely must.

At any rate, in preparing for the various celebrations, I find myself reflecting on the UIL and, specifically, the journalism contests.

Student Activity Conferences and Centennial Celebrations Mark the Start of the Year

By Treva Dayton | Wednesday, November 04, 2009 12:50 PM

When I turned my desk calendar from October to November — and yes, despite my Blackberry’s electronic calendar I still rely on the old-fashioned one for notes, reminders, etc. — I had to pause and marvel at how quickly the first part of the school year had passed. But I realized that recent months hadn’t just flown by but had been packed with so many events and projects that the days just seemed to blur together.

Schools Continue to Support Sunday Rule

By Jana Riggins | Wednesday, November 04, 2009 12:46 PM

Throughout the years, speech coaches and debaters from a few of the larger conference programs in the state have argued that the Sunday Prohibition Rule (C&CR, Section 900, (b)) should be repealed or, at least, modified to allow students to be sponsored by their League member school to more tournaments that hold rounds on Sunday.

New LD Handbook Availiable for Students and Coaches

By Jana Riggins | Thursday, September 10, 2009 12:52 PM

As you or your Academic Coordinator prepare your order for UIL study materials this fall, don’t forget to include the new UIL Lincoln Douglas Debate Guide.

With the continuing evolution of LD Debate and changing styles and trends, the League commissioned a brand new manual. Larry McCarty, long-time educator, successful debate coach, UIL Sponsor Excellence Award recipient and LD State Advisory Committee member is the author of this student-friendly text. Larry’s continued involvement in concentrated debate research made him a logical choice to write this new manual.

Included in the book, most notably, is an entire chapter devoted to philosophy. Additional chapters include: Introduction to LD Debate, Fundamentals of Value Debate, Evidence and Research, Preparing the Case, Cross-Examination Strategies, Communication and Refutation, and Tournament Competition.
