Spring 2009 UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report

The UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for the spring semester of the 2008-09 school year has been released by the UIL. The statistical report of the testing program that took place between January 2009 and May 2009 includes information such as the total number of tests conducted, the number of positive results and the breakdown of student-athletes tested by sport and gender.

Of the 16,260 tests conducted, there were eight (8) confirmed positive results and one (1) unresolved test result. The unresolved result was reported from the laboratory with Testosterone: Epitestosterone (T:E) ratios greater than 6:1. For Testosterone, the definition of positive depends on an adverse analytical finding (positive result) based on the methods listed in the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol which shows that the Testosterone is of exogenous origin, or if the ratio of the total concentration of Testosterone to that of Epitestosterone (T:E) in the urine is greater than 6:1, unless there is evidence that this ratio is due to a physiological or pathological condition.

Additionally, there were sixty-two (62) protocol positive results. These protocol positive results occurred as violations of the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol. Fifty (50) of these violations were the result of unexcused absences and twelve (12) were due to refusal of the student-athlete to participate in the collection process.

Of the 266 schools where tests were conducted, 10,276 boys were tested representing 11 categories and 5,984 girls were tested representing 13 categories. The sports with the most student-athletes tested were football for males (3,135) and soccer for females (830). The total number of student-athletes tested for each sport does not include multiple sport participants.

Overall, there were 5,117 freshmen student-athletes tested, the most of any grade level.
